DIY Hand Sanitizer

Published by Rebecca Baron on

It’s really simple!

You can easily make your own personal hand sanitizer at home that is just as effective as store-bought. Even better, you can customize with your favorite scents with essential oils that not only add natural fragrance but cleansing properties too!

What You’ll Need

  • 2/3 cup of ethanol or 99% rubbing alcohol
  • 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel
  • 10-15 drops of essential oils
  • Travel size plastic squeezable containers
  • A funnel

Simply combine the ingredients together, and stir vigorously. Then spoon the solution into plastic squeezable containers with a funnel. Viola!

While rubbing alcohol and aloe vera will do the trick, adding certain essential oils can boost their effectiveness. This will also make your DIY version much healthier than store-bought with artificial fragrance.

Essential oils are very concentrated plant compounds derived from plants, flower or fruit through various processes such as steam distillation. Each oil varies in its uses and benefits.

The top cleansing essential oils are:

  • Lavender (my favorite!)
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Tea Tree (Eucalyptus)
  • Citrus
    • Lemon, lemongrass, lime, orange, or grapefruit

They are so concentrated and potent, they can pass the cell membrane. This is why they are often diluted with some sort of carrier, like coconut oil or the aloe vera here in this recipe. Also for this reason, try to get organic or therapeutic grade essential oils for purity sake.

Save yourself the headache and hassle, while keeping yourself clean with this simple DYI trick.
